In Portugal, Children's Day is celebrated on June 1st.

This ephemeris was first marked in 1950 at the initiative of the United Nations, with the aim of drawing attention to the problems that children then faced. On this day, Member States recognized that all children, irrespective of race, color, religion, social origin, country of origin, have the right to affection, love and understanding, adequate food, medical care, free education, protection from all forms of exploitation and to grow in a climate of peace and fraternity.

Officially, the day is marked by the United Nations (UN) on November 20, the date on which, in 1959, the Rights of the Child were approved by the UN General Assembly. On the same date (November 20), but in 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Portugal ratified on September 21, 1990.
